All mowers and machinery needs maintenance and understanding; gang mowers have specific needs but once set up are easy to maintain.

We offer a complete service on the above machines, but as a guide the areas that need particular attention and you need to check regularly are:

Rear rollers

They support the whole cutter unit and dictate the exact cut height. The cutter unit should only ride on the roller if set up correctly, and have no other contact with the ground, in normal mowing conditions (except on undulating ground). The roller bearings are very important. If they can be greased via a nipple then they should be – regularly. If they are sealed (non greasable), check for bearings going stiff or any up and down movement. You can repair rollers, or buy new budget price ones, or buy top quality new ones (these cost around £150 each).

Bottom blade

These should have a lip on them in most circumstances, if not they are worn out. The setting to the cut cylinder is critical for a clean cut. The bottom blade should be level and be constant along its entire length in relation to the cut cylinder. Bottom blades can be hard to change, please ring for details. They need grinding at regular intervals to make them true and give them a clean sharp square edge. New bottom blades need to be ground on a machine to true them up before they are fitted to the cutter head.

Mower Bottom Blade Service

Cut cylinders.

They are the red bit that spins round. They need to be dead true, not damaged, with a nice sharp square edge on each blade section (usually 4 or 6 per cylinder). They are worn out when you get down to the weld that holds each blade into the rings (usually takes years). The bearings at each end are also very important, and play in these bearings mean the cylinder cannot be set accurately to the bottom blade, so you will not get a clean cut and you may wear the cylinder prematurely. We nearly always fit new bearings to cut cylinders. They are sharpened on a special grinding machine.

Cut Cylinders

Other:

Other items that need to be right are the support system for each cutter head, that holds the cutter unit true while allowing it to follow the undulations of the ground. They can get damaged, bent or cease up through lack of lubricant. The chassis, frame and float systems vary from machine to machine, but we can advise you accordingly or carry out any work necessary if there is a problem.

The other areas that need attention are:

  • Drive system, either hydraulic or by wheels, usually only need maintenance and quick checks.
  • Adjusters, all cutter heads have adjusters that affect cut quality and exact cut height which is why gang mowers can give such a good quality of cut.
Adjusters are fine if they get a little lubrication occasionally. The process of adjusting takes a few minutes occasionally and is usually easy, and only requires fine alterations. The system for adjusting varies over different machines. We will go over all these points and show you what to do when you get your machine.
  • We usually supply an operators handbook also.

Please feel free to ring for advice or to discuss any areas of doubt.

The bottom blade should be level and be constant along its entire length in relation to the cut cylinder. Bottom blades can be hard to change, please ring for details. The screws or bolts that hold bottom blades on must be in very good condition, particularly the threads, as a loose bottom blade will result in bad cutting and a lot more problems. They need grinding from time to time, to make them true and give them a clean sharp square edge. New bottom blades need to be ground on a machine to true them up before they are fitted to the cutter head.
